System ATLANTA – June 18, 2007 – Inter-Card
Biometrics, headquartered in Washington, D.C., has been hired by the
Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, Inc. to install a medical information system
at the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital and Research Center in the Democratic
Republic of the Congo (“DRC”) that will be interoperable between all
departments by allowing for and managing the flow of data and files
throughout the hospital. After meeting with the doctors,
administrators and staff, ICB in partnership with Health Information
Management Solutions (HIMS) a New Jersey based company, designed a fully
interoperable Electronic Health Record (EHR) complete with secure
smartcard and biometric controlled access for doctors and patients. The
Smartcards, backend systems and complete I.T. infrastructure designed and
implemented by subcontractor Competech SmartCard Solutions (also based in
New Jersey), seamlessly integrate a smartcard driven Portable Medical
Records System (PMR) into the Electronic Health Record and provide secure
employee access to sensitive or restricted areas of the compound as well
as network resources. The people of Kinshasa will have instant and highly
secured access to their medical history throughout the Biambi Marie
Mutombo Hospital network of locations. The proposed system will also
offer the ability to make the portable medical record available to
authorized caregivers at remote hospitals and healthcare centers
throughout the world. “We are proud to be a part of making Dikembe Mutombo’s
dream of better healthcare for the Congolese people a reality.”, said Mr.
Ronald Harvey, CEO of Inter-Card Biometrics. “Many of us dream of finding a way
to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than most of us,
but few of us are willing to use our personal resources to fulfill that
dream. Dikembe Mutombo has
given freely and willingly of his own resources and time to lift his
fellow Congolese up from poverty, and to improve access to modern
healthcare in the DRC. I
personally witnessed the generosity and conviction of this young visionary
leader during my assignment as the Director of the U.S. Agency for
International Development Mission in the DRC from 2000-2001. Mr. Mutombo has shown the world
that one person with drive and determination can make a difference. Inter-Card Biometrics’ tailor-made
Electronic Healthcare Management System for the DRC will certainly enable
Mr. Mutombo to fulfill his dream and promise to the memory of his beloved
mother by delivering quality healthcare to all parts of the Congo.” The main features of the system include: reliable
access control and security via biometrics (fingerprint scans) and
smartcards; ability to collect and store information by authorized
personnel from stationary medical institutions and clinics; ability to
collect and store information and date by mobile agents; reliable and
secure reporting and data analysis.
Lenovo Computers has committed to providing IT
infrastructure and consulting services for the Mutombo hospital. In
addition to donating Lenovo ThinkPad notebook computers with Microsoft
Office, integrated fingerprint readers and wireless LAN capabilities,
Lenovo is also helping the hospital evaluate and implement
state-of-the-art biometric identification capabilities for security and
patient identification. NBA All-Star Dikembe Mutombo of the Houston Rockets
